Polignano a Mare
A Complete Guide to Pristine Beaches, Cliff Diving, and Culinary Delights
Perched on a breathtaking limestone cliff overlooking the sparkling Adriatic Sea, Polignano a Mare is one of Puglia’s brightest gems.
It is a magical destination where the whitewashed historic houses contrast beautifully with the deep blue of the sea.
⏱️How much time do you need?
Polignano is a wonderfully compact town. If you are short on time, you can easily visit its main highlights in just half a day. However, to enjoy the "full experience"—including a leisurely boat tour, some beach relaxation, and an unforgettable meal—we highly recommend dedicating a full day to this coastal paradise.
If you are planning your next trip, here is the ultimate guide to experiencing the very best of Polignano—from scenic beaches and high-adrenaline cliff dives to rich cultural landmarks and unforgettable local flavors.
🏰 Exploring the Historic Center (Centro Storico): A Tourist's Haven
The beating heart of Polignano is its labyrinth of whitewashed, winding streets. Stepping into the old town is like stepping onto a living film set, where medieval architecture meets coastal romance. Here is your guide to wandering through it.
The Gateway: Arco Marchesale (Porta Grande)
Your journey begins at the Arco Marchesale (also known as Porta Grande). Until the late 18th century, this imposing stone archway was the only way to enter the town. It was originally equipped with a drawbridge and defensive structures to protect residents from pirate raids. Today, passing under its vault serves as a beautiful threshold separating the modern world from the timeless charm of the old borough.
The Heart: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II
As you walk through the narrow alleyways, you will naturally emerge into Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the main square. This lively square is the perfect spot to grab an outdoor table, sip an espresso, and people-watch. It is dominated by two historic structures:
Palazzo dell'Orologio (The Clock Palace): A medieval building featuring a spectacular clock that is still wound by hand to this day using a system of ropes and weights.
Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria Assunta: The main church of the town, dating back to 1295, which houses invaluable local art and sacred relics.
The Soul: The Poetry-Painted Walls of "Guido il Flaneur"
One of the most unique and romantic features of Polignano's historic center is the poetry painted onto the white walls, doors, and stone steps. These verses—ranging from classic works by Neruda, Shakespeare, and Ungaretti to original pieces—are hand-painted by a beloved local artist known as "Guido il Flaneur". He created these to encourage tourists to slow down, look up, and reflect while getting lost in the alleys.
The Windows to the Sea: Iconic Viewpoints (Belvedere)
The narrow streets of the old town will suddenly open up to jaw-dropping, windy balconies perched right over the cliffs. Be sure to seek out these famous viewpoints:
Belvedere di Santo Stefano: Offering the most iconic, postcard-perfect view of the Lama Monachile beach below and the cliffs opposite.
Belvedere Suor Maria Laselva: Located deep in the alleys, this spot offers a dramatic, straight-down view of the crashing turquoise waves and the hidden sea caves.
Largo Ardito: A spacious terrace on the edge of the historic center, ideal for watching the sunset and looking out into the endless blue of the Adriatic horizon.
The Sea of Polignano: Picturesque Coves and Beach Clubs
The most iconic image of Polignano is undoubtedly Lama Monachile (also known as Cala Porto). Nestled right at the entrance of the historic center, this public pebble beach framed by two towering Roman-era cliffs is a sight to behold. Since it is entirely free to access and world-famous, it tends to get crowded very early in the day.
Please note that there are no bookable day beds or tourist structures on this beach. Due to the heavy crowds and the uneven, rocky terrain, visiting Lama Monachile can be quite challenging if you are traveling with kids and toddlers. Additionally, while you can technically rent beach umbrellas from local vendors outside the beach, we highly advise against this; anchoring them securely into the hard, loose pebbles is extremely difficult and highly unstable.
If you are looking for more breathing room, family-friendly shores, or specific amenities, the surrounding coastline offers excellent alternatives, both free and private:
Free Beaches Nearby
Cala Paura: Located just a short walk from the town center, this is a charming, rustic cove favored by locals, featuring pebbles and colorful traditional fishing boats.
San Vito Beach: Situated in the nearby hamlet of San Vito, this beach is dominated by a majestic Benedictine abbey. It is ideal for those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere and easier access to the water.
Private Beach Clubs & Equipped Beaches
Coco Village (Coze): Perfect for travelers seeking comfort, luxury, and exclusive services. It features elegant wooden platforms built directly onto the rocks, complete with sunbeds and sea access.
Miami Beach (San Vito): Located in the picturesque San Vito area, this fully equipped beach club offers sunbeds, umbrellas, and convenient amenities for a relaxing day by the sea.
Capitolo Beaches (Monopoli): If you prefer wide, sandy shores with full amenities (umbrellas, beach bars, and music), take a short drive to the neighboring town of Monopoli, where you will find excellent beach resorts.
Our Recommendation: If you would like a comfortable beach morning before lunch, we highly recommend booking day beds at Cala di San Giovanni (just a 7-minute drive from Polignano). It is an excellent, fully equipped beach club. Alternatively, Lido Cala Paura is nearby but is a public, rustic beach without advanced booking setups.
For the brave
Polignano is the undisputed world capital of cliff diving, regularly hosting the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series (typically held between late June and September, with the highly anticipated 2026 Italian stop scheduled for September 25–27 as the penultimate round of the season). If you are feeling adventurous and exercise extreme caution, you can join the local youth and try diving off the cliffs surrounding the town.
What to See: Poetry, Music, and Historic Alleys
The beating heart of Polignano is its labyrinth of whitewashed streets in the Historic Center (Centro Storico). As you wander around, you will find poetic verses painted onto walls and steps, and you will suddenly emerge onto spectacular terraces offering panoramic, sweeping views of the sea.
Just outside the old town, a visit to the Domenico Modugno Statue is an absolute must. Standing with his arms wide open toward the sea, this bronze monument pays tribute to Polignano's most famous son, the singer-songwriter who made the entire world sing "Nel blu dipinto di blu" (commonly known as "Volare").
Unmissable Experiences: The Boat Tour
To truly appreciate the beauty of Polignano, you must see it from the water. A boat tour allows you to explore the spectacular sea caves (grotte) carved into the cliffs. For a touch of romance, book a sunset tour that includes an aperitivo on board, allowing you to sip local Apulian wine while the sun dips below the cliffside town.

Iconic Street Food & Casual Spots
No trip to Polignano is complete without visiting these three legendary culinary institutions:

Olio su Pane: A charming and vibrant gourmet bistrot located in the heart of Polignano a Mare on Via Roma. Famous for its casual yet high-quality dining experience, this cozy spot celebrates authentic Apulian flavors.
Il Mago del Gelato (by Mario Campanella): A historic gelateria located just steps from the old town entrance. Besides their delicious artisanal gelato, you must try their famous Caffè Speciale (Special Coffee)—a local invention made with espresso, sugar, lemon zest, fresh cream, and amaretto liqueur. It is a surprisingly harmonious blend that provides the perfect energy boost to continue your adventure.
Polignano a Mare is a sensory journey that combines the scent of the sea, the thrill of high cliffs, the melody of timeless music, and the authentic taste of Puglia. Enjoy your trip!
